The great news here is that usually, the entire word doesn’t need to be memorized. Notice I mentioned PART of the word needs to be memorized. These words that are not fully decodable are sometimes known as “heart words” or “red words” because at least part of the word needs to be memorized in order to sound it out effectively. Words like “was” and “of” have at least one letter that doesn’t make a predicted sound pattern. However, some words are not fully decodable. In this case, students would need to be familiar with the R-controlled syllable type but as soon as they are familiar with that pattern the word becomes decodable. Or, if we consider the word “bird” bird is decodable if students know that “IR” says /r/. In the example provided above, the word “them” will be decodable as soon as a student learns that TH says /th/. So for example, if a student has learned that U says /u/ and S says /s/ the word “us” is decodable. There are 7 Steps to a SMARTER Research-Based Instruction Framework (we use the acronym SMARTER to help remember each of the key components!) 1 - Systematic Instruction Sight words (words that need to be learned by sight) can be taught systematicallyĪ decodable word is a word that can be sounded out with a student’s current level of knowledge. Instead, we can use a systematic framework and progression to help build a foundation for future learning while also giving students the knowledge they need to be successful at their current level. Now that said, we don’t need to have students memorize these words. Because they come up so often, it can be helpful to teach students these patterns a little earlier in their instructional journey. This is why sight words are also known as high-frequency words. However, there are many words that students need to know before they get to that level of progression because they come up so frequently. We talked more about this progression over here! When students are learning to read, they should be working through a progression of concepts as they’re learning to “sound out” words. The tricky thing is that students need to be taught a systematic set of rules and patterns to decode words effectively. Sight words are important because students need to have a certain level of automaticity to comprehend what they are reading. Basically, they are words we can read automatically without thinking about them. Sight words are words that need to be recognized by “sight” or words that we need to automatically recognize without sounding the word out. So we are jumping in to explain what these words actually are, and what the research says about how we should be teaching them!įirst things first - What are sight words? I value your feedback greatly as it helps me determine which products are most valuable for your classroom so I can create more for you.In reading intervention we hear terms like sight words, high-frequency words, phonetically irregular words, red words, heart words, and so many other variations used every day. The app also has libraries of chords, sound effects, piano, and guitar so that you can mix your beat with appropriate chords. So basically, it’s not a full replacement for GarageBand, but you can learn how to deal with beats, melodies, and mixing at a basic level. If you loved sound packs from GarageBand, let me tell you BandLab has a similar library, and it does not cost a dime. BandLab allows you to record, edit, and create multi-track music using various kinds of creative effects like beats, vocals, loops, and most importantly hundreds of sound packs. I would say it’s almost there with GarageBand in terms of music editing and launchpad. BandLabīandLab is a promising new app in the Android ecosystem for creating music from scratch. Having said all of that, you can also record your voice and then mix it with a synthesizer, edit the track, and so on. In addition, what makes this app a complete alternative to GarageBand is the fact that you can connect USB MIDI peripheral keyboard to your smartphone, and Walk Band will detect it. Talking about instruments, you have access to a piano, keyboard, drum pad, and guitar that works in both solo and chords mode. Walk Band has also been awarded as Editor’s Choice on the Google Play Store. I then realised the value of doing finger stretching, warmups & taking proper breaks. I took full 2days break from playing guitar (Its really difficult to be part off from guitar, my love & passion!!!). I had PINKY break for 3-4days & played only with Index, middle & ring finger!!! After 4months I overworked my PINKY with hammer-on, pull-off & chromatic exercises emphasing PINKY workout. Even touching any string with PINKY was painfull. 1st time within 7 days of starting this kind of exercises. Eventually I was able to play those damned barre chords for longer time without any pain!!! I also developed water filled boils in my PINKY when I started hammer-on & pull-off exercises emphasing PINKY strength & durability. I just used to sit infront of TV with gritted teeth & Index finger pressed in barre (no other finger was used). I started with 2mins & gradually over time I was able to press Index barre for 1/2 an Hour. I used to continously press just the barre with my index for as long as I can. Gripping those barre chords was by itself a hell lotta difficult & painfull since I got very very small hands. When I started playing barre chords I wasn't able to make them sound good & was only able to play for 5mins at max. No pain no gain barre chord pain overcoming way If anyone here has experienced pain in their fingers, please let us know how you dealt with it using the comments link below. Keep in touch with your progress using the comments form below. If after that break you play the guitar and the pain hits you again after 15 minutes, it's time to see the doc. If the pain stays with you for over an hour after putting the guitar down, then it may be more serious and I would first try a week or even 2 week break from guitar all together (I know, this is not easy if you really enjoy playing!). If you can play for 15 minutes, put the guitar down and be able to pick it up again in another 15, then I would just keep having those breaks and see if you can gradually play for longer and longer periods without pain until it goes away. Pain is, unfortunately, a necessary part of a guitarist's progress.ĥ) Does the pain subside shortly after putting the guitar down or does it linger for days after? Barre chords naturally require more strength than open chords, so if you've started using them more then your fingers might just be adjusting. Some techniques are more intensive than others. Try to relax and apply as little pressure as possible.ģ) Am I using some effective finger stretching exercises before I play?Ĥ) Have I learned any new techniques recently that may be putting more strain on my fingers or am I using a certain technique more than before? It could be that you're gripping the chords tensely, putting more strain on your thumb joint. However, there are some fundamentals you should double check, such as making sure your thumb is positioned correctly.Ģ) Am I applying more pressure than is actually necessary to grip the chords? If nothing has changed, and you haven't experienced pain before, then it's probably not to do with your technique. It's only when the pain gets worse, or physically stops you from playing that you ought to consider seeing your doctor as it could be RSI related.įirstly, ask yourself the following questions:ġ) Has my hand position, action or technique changed recently? So I wouldn't advise the "gritted teeth" method.īut on the other hand, I know guitarists who have been playing for decades and these apparently random phases of pain are quite normal and usually associated with minor changes in your playing technique or the focus of your practice sessions. Now, I might have just been lucky in all these cases and I could have made the pain ten times worse by ignoring it. Only in the past week have I noticed it subsiding. Most recently I was getting frequent pain in my wrist after playing for over an hour. Again, I played through it and the pain went away after a couple of months. I also had a similar problem with my index finger. I gritted my teeth, played through it and the pain soon went away. I hadn't changed my technique or hand position and for some reason, out of the blue, my thumb started hurting after short periods of playing barre chords. I had exactly the same problem a couple of years ago. As I play a little (15-20 min) it stars to hurt bitterly. I play guitar for about 2 years and only last time I started feel strong pain in thumb joint when playing barre chords. Pain in Thumb Joint When Playing Barre Chords We will do this by using the Sprite.MoveTo block. When the Clock1.Timer goes off, we want all of our gold coin ImageSprites to move to a new random location on the Canvas. We will use Clock1.Timer and the ImageSprite's MoveTo method to do this. We want the coins to move to random positions on the screen. To prevent the pirate from moving off the screen, we will also use PirateSprite.Bounce when an edge is reached. This means that the user can now control the direction of the pirate ship with their fingers by flinging on the screen. We want to reassign PirateSprite's current heading to the heading given to us from PirateSprite.Flung. You may notice that PirateSprite.Flung takes in 6 attributes: x, y, xvel, yvel, speed, and heading. To do this, we will use the PirateSprite.Flung event handler. To move the PirateSprite, we want the user to be able to "fling" the sprite in the direction that they choose. Upload the goldcoin image and set Picture property to goldcoin. Upload the pirateship image and set Picture property to pirateship. Set the properties of the components as described below: Component To reset the game so the player can play again We use the Clock for its Timer method to move the coins The background that we will be putting our imagesprites on To create this interface, put the following components into the Designer by dragging them from the Component Palette into the Viewer. When you finish, it should look something like the snapshot below (more detailed instructions below the snapshot). Use the component designer to create the interface for GetTheGold. Click below to download the image file for your sprites. This tutorial introduces the following skills, useful for future game development:įor this game, you will have two types of imagesprites: pirate and gold coin. Switch to the Blocks view and connect to a device or emulator. Name it GetTheGold, and also set the screen's Title to "GetTheGold". Getting StartedĬonnect to the App Inventor web site and start a new project. You'll program an application that has a pirate ship whose goal is to collect all the gold on the screen. By building the Get The Gold App you will get practice with setting visibility, using Clock components and Timers, and detecting collisions in App Inventor. For a model like this that is not a simple, rectangular building and needs to be rendered on all sides in 2D, Match Photo is not a feasible solution. I also tried the Match Photo tool in SketchUp, but the dialog box and pins are incredibly difficult to use. I scoured the internet, but could not find a way to view/alter the camera lens settings in Google Earth in order to match them in/to SketchUp. If youre already in 3D view, you’ll find 2D instead. Switch between top-down view and orbiting 3D view: At the bottom right, click 3D. Learn how to experience places in Street View. You’ll find exotic cities, landmarks in 3D, and buildings up close. However, I already tried overlaying an exported image from SketchUp onto an exported image from Google Earth - using the same Scene/Placemark Snapshot - for both images, but the images do not align due to what seems to be a difference in camera lens settings between the two programs. Immersive View on Google Maps combines regular navigation and Street View, using cameras on cars, planes, and backpacks to create 3D models of locations. You can use Google Earth to travel the world and explore new places. I also have access to Photoshop, so if there is a solution to this issue involving Photoshop, I should be able to utilize that method. Is there a way to import a SketchUp model into Google Earth so that the land area where my model exists is cropped out from the Google Earth model? If I turn the existing buildings and trees off (3D Buildings > Photorealistic) in Google Earth, it turns the hi-res topography off with it. I would like to be able to display it in 3D in the context of the surrounding neighborhoods, but when I import the SketchUp model as a KMZ into Google Earth, my model conflicts with the existing buildings and vegetation on the site. I built a model of an entire neighborhood in SketchUp: houses, trees, topography, etc. By late 2011, over 200 million licenses of Office 2010 were sold. “God, give me the grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed,Ĭourage to change the things which should be changed,Īnd the wisdom to distinguish one from the other, amen.” Meaning Of The Serenity Prayer The alternate version, which is more Christian in nature says, “O God and Heavenly Father grant to us the serenity of mind to accept that which cannot be changed,Ĭourage to change that which can be changed,Īnd wisdom to know the one from the other through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.” “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The form you have selected does not exist. Niebuhr’s daughter, also gave the prayer’s background in her book “The Serenity Prayer: Faith and Politics in Times of Peace and War”. From then on till now, the Serenity Prayer has been used in the fellowship’s recovery circles as well as many rehabilitation programs around the world. One of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, William Griffith Wilson, loved the prayer so much that he gave a copy of it to the members. In 1941, a member of the Alcoholics Anonymous fellowship found it in the obituary section of the New York Herald Tribune and shared it with the rest of the group. With such wisdom and depth packed in its short lines, it’s not surprising that the prayer gained such popularity. Then in 1940, Winnifred Wygal placed a slightly changed version in a book of worship. The prayer first surfaced in newspapers in the 1930s. Niebuhr penned the words in his diary, which was maintained by his student Winnifred Crane Wygal. The words of this prayer were written by Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr, an American theologian and ethicist who lived from 1892-1971.ĭr. Though it is popular in Christianity, the Serenity prayer isn’t written anywhere in the Bible. The first question people usually ask is, “is the serenity prayer in the Bible?” When you can constantly shift your focus to working on the things you can change about an issue, instead of mourning the ones you can’t, that’s serenity. Whatever circumstance you are faced with, differentiating between the two is key to having peace. If you’re having financial difficulties, you also have some level of control over your spending and savings habits. Sometimes, things like doubt and anxiety, and self-pity can cloud our ability to differentiate between the two.įor example, if you have a family member who constantly demeans you, although you can’t control their actions, you can control how you respond. In the current context, it is the ability to discern between the things that we have control over and the ones we don’t. But courage is the ability to make moves regardless of the fears in our hearts. This doesn’t mean that we won’t be faced with fear. We can either feel sorry for ourselves or swing into action to change the things that we have control over. When we are faced with an obstacle, there are two types of approaches we can have towards it. In this prayer, courage is the strength we need to tackle the things that are within our reach. Focusing on the ones that we can do something about is where we need courage. Living with the reality that there are things that we can’t turn around with our actions, helps us develop serenity. The Bible itself tells us that by worrying, we can’t even add a day to our lives, rather we even shorten it. Worrying does nothing but make us more anxious. A lot of people spend a lot of time obsessing and worrying over the things they have no control over. In the context of this prayer, acceptance means letting go of the things we can’t change. It is actually more of a perspective than it is a virtue because it comes from a place of acceptance. But serenity is something that can be developed with God’s help and a lot of practice. Looking at everything going on in the world today, it can sound a bit too good to be true. It is a type of peace that is constant even in the unstable chaos of the world. It isn’t affected by the things that go on around us, good or bad. Serenity is a synonym for peace and tranquility, the opposite of anxiety. |
